White Sox OF Luis Robert Jr. left today’s game vs. the Diamondbacks. Garion Thorne has the latest updates.
UPDATE: Luis Robert Jr. exited Wednesday game versus Arizona due to left hamstring tightness.
This could be a situation to keep an eye on for a number of reasons. While we’re still a month away from the MLB Trade Deadline, Luis Robert Jr. is one of the big names expected to be on the move this summer. Whether that’s connected to the outfielder being pulled from this afternoon’s contest versus the Diamondbacks is unclear, though. All we know for sure at the moment is that Robert was replaced in the lineup prior to his scheduled at-bat in the second inning.
The 27-year-old is in the midst of a truly terrible campaign, as Robert is slashing just .185/.270/.313 with a 30.9% strikeout rate. The numbers under the hood aren’t much better, either. As Robert combines a 17th percentile expected batting average (.232) with a seventh percentile whiff rate (32.4%).
Still, Robert is only two years removed from clubbing 38 home runs with a 128 wRC+. He’s stealing a ton of bases and he’s a plus-defender in center field. With his age and pedigree, I feel confident that there will still be at least a couple of teams willing to take a chance on Robert in the final guaranteed year of his $50 million contract.
