CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — A homeless shelter in Carlisle said it suffered flooding and broken windows after intense rainfall Monday night.
Community CARES—a nonprofit shelter located on 50 W. Penn St.—said in a Facebook post that its entire men and women’s shelter was flooded.
The nonprofit posted photos of the damage, showing water and debris on the floor under the shelter beds.
“Sadly this floor is only a month old,” the shelter said.
Flash flooding turned roadways into rivers Monday evening throughout the county, trapping vehicles in rushing water.
Storms also brought down trees and wires, causing thousands of outages in the county.
Cumberland Goodwill EMS warned drivers not to attempt to go through flood waters or drive around road closures.
The EMS agency said the county’s Public Works Department and volunteer firefighters are working to clear trees off roads and assess damage.
CBS 21 reached out to Community CARES to confirm whether or not it is still open but hasn’t heard back at this time.
