With all the uncertainty involving star forward Mitch Marner, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ front office will need to get creative to replace his services. Marner is expected to leave the team via free agency this summer, and in doing so, he would create a massive hole in the lineup.

The Toronto roster could look very different next season following another early playoff exit. But the front office is still determined to put together a strong team that can compete for a Stanley Cup.
With Marner likely out, the Maple Leafs will need to strike quickly to build a strong roster. But it seems that they could be looking at a rival All-Star to fill the void.
According to NHL insider Arthur Staple of The Athletic, the Maple Leafs could be targeting Mika Zibanejad of the New York Rangers.
Adding Zibanejad to the mix could be a great way to replace the production of Marner in the lineup. The veteran center has scored at least 20 goals in eight straight seasons, and he could add a major boost to this offensive attack.

Last season, Zibanejad scored 20 goals and 42 assists for the Rangers. With New York seemingly tearing things down, Zibanejad could be a strong candidate to be moved this summer.

The biggest downside to adding Zibanejad to the team is his contract. Zibanejad is on the books for five more seasons, with a salary of $8.5 million each year.
However, if the Maple Leafs are serious about winning, this could be a smart move for them to consider. Zibanejad has been one of the more consistent players around the NHL in recent years and could help Toronto compete for a title next season.
