TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley is set to host a PGA Tour event for the first time, and it has drawn a strong field for the Canadian Open, headlined by Rory McIlroy.
The Northern Irishman’s status as a short-priced favourite has created some palatable odds elsewhere in the market, and one name that stands out is Sam Burns. Widely regarded as the best putter in the world right now, Burns found something with his irons at Muirfield Village last week.
It has taken long enough, but the American’s long game has been slowly moving in the right direction. It was awful from March through to mid-April, but there were signs of life with the driver at Augusta and after gaining strokes through the bag at the Memorial, Burns may be ready to contend again, as he did with regularity last summer.
Top Canadian – Taylor Pendrith
Taylor Pendrith was the closest player to Scottie Scheffler in strokes gained on approach last week. The flat stick let him down but the T12 was still a nice tune-up for Pendrith’s national open at a track few players know better.
The Ontario native was runner-up at the Osprey Valley Open in 2019. While TPC Toronto has since undergone a renovation, he still holds a valuable course experience edge over the rest of the field.
Driving distance is likely to be a huge advantage at this 7,389-yard par 70. That makes Pendrith an attractive proposition against the likes of Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes, and Nick Taylor in the Top Canadian market.
Conners’ elite iron play means he is still a big threat, but it’s difficult to see how the others can keep pace over four rounds on a course that rewards length as much as this one does.
Winner – Sebastian Munoz (each-way)
Robert Trent Jones Golf Club is the venue for the final LIV Golf event before the US Open. The club has been open for 34 years, and had hosted the Presidents Cup four times by 2005.
The 2015 Quicken Loans National was also held there. Troy Merritt emerged victorious, with Rickie Fowler and David Lingmerth his closest challengers.
Most of the top of the leaderboard was filled with accurate drivers who find greens in regulation. The course demands a combination of technical, strategic, and mental skills, and I have seen enough from Sebastian Munoz as of late to suggest he is up to the task.
The Colombian is not the longest hitter but he has gained off the tee in his last six LIV starts. Pair that with his approach play, for which he leads the field over the last 36 rounds, and this test should suit him well.
He lost out in a playoff at a US Open qualifier on Monday, but is a top alternate and still stands a chance of teeing it up at Oakmont, therefore he will want to ensure he goes there off the back of another encouraging performance.
Winner – Talor Gooch (each-way)
It was a poor start to 2025 for Talor Gooch but after a T12 in Miami and a T13 in Mexico City, it all clicked in Korea last month as he finished in third place.
That’s five events on the spin now in which Gooch has gained on approach, and his short game is also in excellent shape.
The wins have dried up since his trio of successes in 2023 but Gooch is trending towards competing for more titles and this might be the last time for a while we get to back him at such a good price to do so.
